I've owned a FitBit for a while now, and I'm a bit of a fan. Theses are my top 5 reasons to use FitBit products
My weight (and also general health) has been all over the place for a while now. It’s taking some serious commitment to try and bring it back into line, and while I don’t feel like I’m succeeding yet, there is one tool that’s really helping. I’m using a couple of different FitBit products to help monitor, track and motivate me to make a lasting change in my life.
I’ve spoken about using a FitBit tracker before, but a recent experience with the company has prompted me to revisit what I think of them. And in the best way possible! Here are just a few of the reasons that really make me appreciate FitBit and how the company operates.
Reliable and Affordable Trackers
FitBit have a wide range of tracker for all many different user cases and price points. Their product page goes through the variety of trackers and watches to help you choose. I decided against a full watch, if I wanted that functionality I probably would have chosen an Apple Watch. I don’t need to answer text or calls from my wrist. The choice was east with the lightweight and streamlined feel of the trackers. And it fits perfectly.
In the end I bought an Alta HR. It has a changeable band, and offers the heart rate tracking which I think is a valuable function. It’s well made and easy to use. The screen lights up with the time when I lift my wrist, and I can tap the device to cycle through my daily steps, heart rate, kilometres walked and calories burnt.
Functional and Stylish Scales
Once I was satisfied with my FitBit tracker, I began looking at scales. After using a cheap $6 Kmart set, I realised that the hardest part I was facing was reliably logging my weight. I could stand on the scales before a shower, but I rarely recorded the results. I also never saved my percent fat… Oops!
So I splurged. And while not cheap, my Alta 2 scales both look nice in my bathroom, and they reliably record my weight fluctuations. I wish they’d show smaller numbers, but that’s my fault, not the scales!
The FitBit App
I like the FitBit app. It’s on both iOS and Android, and has a clean, clear interface that makes logging and reviewing data a dream. I use it to track my food, sleep, weight, water intake, exercise and even my menstrual cycle (sorry for the TMI). It’s fantastic to have all those data points in one app, and it’s really easy to use. It’s also the sync point for the trackers and scales.
While we’re talking FitBit on a phone, lets discuss the workout apps they support. They have a number of 3rd party apps that they will integrate with, but their own fitness apps are FitBit Coach and FitStar Yoga.
I’m not 100% convinced on the value of these apps. The yoga app is great, albeit challenging. It boasts tailored moves, but that doesn’t seem true. Because of my hip difficulties, I regularly can’t do poses that require my legs at weird angles, yet the app keeps serving these up to me. I opt out every time, and mark them as too difficult, but the app doesn’t seem to actually learn what I need.
The FitBit Coach workout app is a little bit better. It requires some additional equipment (which it doesn’t tell you about until halfway through the workout), but has a good variety of intensities and difficulties. It also seems to better understand when something is too difficult, but clearly has a limited number of exercises as I end up doing the same ones over and over.
The reason I’m talking about FitBit today is because of their excellent custom service. My Alta HR recently had a problem with it’s screen. It just wouldn’t display anything. The tracker was fine and was still collecting data, but I no longer could see the time, my step count or heart rate on the display. My first point of call was their in depth FAQ’s and forum, where it seemed like other users were experiencing similar issues.
When the suggested fix did nothing for my device, I reached out to customer help via web chat. The rep who spoke with me was patient and understanding, and ultimately the solution was for FitBit to replace my device at no cost to me. Talk about excellent customer service! I’ve never left such a glowing chat review, and it really made my day that FitBit were willing to look after me so well.
I’m still not the best at looking after my heath, and I have a lot to learn, but FitBit has made this learning easy. Now I just have to be consistent and deliberate in my choices to actually make some real change!
